Sonic Youth : Wiltern Theatre
September 29th, 2006
Living legends Sonic Youth played the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles last night. It was further proof that they haven’t lost a step or missed a beat after decades of musical service. The majority of songs were off of their most recent Rather Ripped album, which is rather rad. However, they opened up with “Candle”; Lee Ranaldo played “Eric’s Trip,” and the encore included the classic “Teenage Riot” (all three from Daydream Nation). When they took the stage I was pleasantly surprised to see former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold had joined the group. They even covered a Pavement song in the set. Overall, Kim is still super sexy, Lee Ranaldo is still a bad ass, and Thurston Moore still has the most awesome stage presence, while the somewhat unsung Steve Shelly still cranks out the beats to fuel this rock and roll ruckus.

The band played the album in its entirety from start to finish, in order. What a special evening in the friendly (forest fire prone) grounds of Griffith Park. Daydream Nation comprised the first, main set. Afterward former Pavement bassist, Mark Ibold, joined the band to play an encore set of prime songs from SY’s most recent release, Rather Ripped. It’s always great to see these New York natives in the City of Angels. [...]
