Duchess, Mathematicians, and Shit Copter
July 11th, 2005
Last Friday night the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) served up a night of incredible music featuring Duchess and The Mathematicians. Duchess started off the night with dynamic rock that left the audience floating in their wake of powerful sounds. Marike Damhuis belted out the lyrics over Gibb Slife (Guitar), Rebecca Fleetwood (Bass), and Danny Leo (Drums). Andy McCarthy made a guest appearance on two songs with a dose of Banjo.
The Mathematicians followed Duchess and surprised me, and much of the audience, with their nerdy flare and tight, electronic-driven tunes. Pete Pythagoras (Bass), Dewi Decimal (Synthesizer), and Albert Gorithm (Drums, Sampler) shared vocal and “flo” duties during their high energy set. Highlights included fresh renditions of The Weapons of Math Instruction, Binary Girl, and Hypotenuse of Love. The performance amounted to high scores on my abacus, leaving me wanting to square or cube the result by attending future shows!
After the show an after party was held at a bar (also in Brooklyn) called Sputnik. Thankfully the live music continued with the drum and bass duo of Shit Copter, whose performance was an inspiration to us all. Then Quarter Slot finished the night with their sexy lead singer (who also makes a mean brownie) and catchy, eye popping tunes.
Check out the pics. Sorry, but most of the pics are blurry because BAM doesn’t allow photography . . . what is this, the Metropolitan Opera!

[...] Another birthday was celebrated with another radtastic show this weekend at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, CA. The Mathematicians brought their hard-hip-rock-hop to SoCal in full effect and totally rocked my n’abes. Unassuming at first, this nerdly trio blows the roof off with their incredible energy, strong beats and science-infused tunes. An added bonus this time was their elaborate visual effects, which was absent from their BAM show in Brooklyn. The video effects master off stage was almost like a fourth band member, complete with filming equipment and projection system. He was mixing the live feed with pre-produced footage of somewhat random and somewhat themed material (e.g. binary code flying around while they banged out Binary Girl). The Mathematicians describe themselves as harking from “the tri-county region of upstate New York,” as if that clears everything up for the audience’s geographic curiosity. “Oh yeah, I know where that is.” Pete Pythagoras (bass), Dewi Decimal (keyboards) and Albert Gorithm (drums) shared vocal duty, spanning the use of a vocoder all the way into electric hip-hop with math-infused lyrics. At some point each one of them made it off the stage and into the crowd with tightly-gripped microphone-phury, screamin’ and bumpin’ into people (myself included), gettin’ all up in your grill while not missing a beat. Unfortunately they only played about a 40 minute (max) set, possibly due to an apparent delay in the arrival of their equipment. Pick up a copy of “Level One” or the recently released “Level Two” at their myspace page. [...]
